12 February 2010: With the world premiere of the restored first-night version of METROPOLIS 27/10 at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and at the same time at the 60th Berlinale, the project began to make history. BIG cinema mastered this technical challenge and projected the DCP (Digital Cinema Package) onto numerous screen using powerful digital cinema projectors by Christie. Screenings at the Opera in Kassel, at the KunstFestSpiele in Hanover, the Kurt-Weil-Fest in Dessau, in Darmstadt and Cologne as well as during the MaerzMusik in Berlin followed. Besides the original score by Gottfried Huppertz, BIG cinema also presented METROPOLIS 27/10 with the new version of Martin Matalon’s film score funded by the Ensemble Modern.
Numerous international engagements are also impressive in this matter: The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is one of the most famous und greatest operas in the world. BIG cinema brought the silent movie classic with conductor Frank Strobel to the second-largest Italian city and capital of the Province of Milan in 2011. This is completed by screenings during the anniversary “20 years of town twinning between Berlin and Moscow” also in 2011, at the Biennale in Salzburg as well as the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In 2014, the project became a huge success as part of the “Reihe Eins” concerts at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig.
